iPhoto and .JPG Extensions

I just recently purchased a MacBook Pro and am having some problems with it not recognizing the photos on my camera. It will recognize the camera itself, and gives me the import box, but it only shows boxes in the places where my pictures are suppose to be. It will tell me how many pictures that I have on the camera, so I tried to import them, hoping that that the images would show up in iPhoto, but then it bame back and told me that the files couldn't be imported because the file type is not recognized, which was showing as .JPG. Can someone help me out with this? I was able to upload some pictures from an USB drive, but they were JPEG.
