There are, however, a number of apps that are compatible with Office documents. Apple makes iOS versions of their own iWork apps (Pages, Keynote, Numbers) that can be purchased seperately. There are also 3rd party combined suites that cost less than the seperate Apple apps. Ones often recommended inglude Documents 2 Go, Quickoffice and Office2 HD.

Regards.

You can only install apps from the iTunes App Store on your computer or the App Store app on the iPad - 'normal' Mac (OS X) and PC software and not compatible with the iPad (iOS), they are different operating systems.

Microsoft don't make an app version of their office software, but there a number of apps that support word, excel and powerpoint documents e.g. from Apple there are the Pages (word), Numbers (Excel) and Keynote (powerpoint) apps, and from third-parties there are apps such as Documents To Go and QuickOffice HD, both of which support word and excel documents in the one app (QuickOffice and the 'premium' version of Documents To Go support editing of powerpoint documents as well)
