Sony handy cam downloads

We have recently bought an iMac and I am keen to download the backlog of footage we have on a (rather old) DCR-TRV22E Sony Handycam but the driver disk is only suitable on releases of OS up to 9.2. The Mac doesn't recognize the hardware or the disk. Does anyone provided updated sets of drivers?

Further to the excellent advice from thesurreyfriends and elikness, have a look at this Help tutorial from Apple - read the topic "Import video from a tape-based camcorder":

I have a similar camcorder (now rarely used as I'm now mainly on AVCHD) - the Sony DCR-TRV20E. I don't have any problems importing to iMovie '11, including when using the pass through mode to import analog video from a VCR via the camcorder.

The camcorder you have records to mini DV and therefore needs to be connected to your iMac with a Firewire cable .As your Mac is new it will, most likely, need to be 4 pin from the camcorder and 9 pin (firewire 800) to your Mac.

You do not need any Sony drivers to import your footage as you should be able to do this with the already installed iMovie. Connect camcorder with firewire cable and open iMovie and you should be 'good to go'.

As thesurreyfriends has said, connect the camcorder with the firewire cable THEN open iMovie. The order of events is pretty important when trying to get iMovie to recognize the camera. Also, be aware to use the power adapter that came with the camera. Don't try to run it just from the rechargable battery, as that can be a source of unreliability when getting the Mac to see the camera.

Note that the memory stick that Klaus1 referred to is for capturing stills and also for recording video in the MPEG-1 format. See this CNET review:

iMovie may have problems importing MPEG-1 video clips, but should work fine with miniDV tape footage recorded by this camcorder (the camcorder's primary recording method). My DCR-TRV20E uses the memory stick for stills only, so I have no experience with MPEG-1. It may need conversion to another format (such as AIC or H.264) before being usable by iMovie.
