IPTC - updating masters

I want to update IPTC data so that, if my library ever needs to be rebuilt, the keywords are embedded in the jpegs themselves. So I imported some pics, put in some keywords, clicked on "write IPTC to master", then deleted the files from Aperture and reimported from Finder, but the keywords aren't attached to the files. How to permanently attach keywords? Thanks.
