Can an ipod's board be damaged?

Hi. I´m from Ecuador and have a 4g 32gb ipod touch. The other day while I was taking a pic the ipod fell to the ground and it wouldn´t turn on. So I took it to my local apple authorized store and they told me that the ipod has suffered a board damage and that the repair cost would be of 200 dolars. So my question is if this could happen and if anyone knows about how much do the repair cost in the U.S. would be, because here in Ecuador everything is a total rip-off. Thanks

Well they aren't from the official apple store. Here in Ecuador there are no apple stores but apple's authorized resellers. And two years ago I had an ipod video which hard drive was damaged. I took it to this store and they told me the repair had a cost of 180 dollars. I sent it to the U.S. and got it repaired for 30 bucks.
