Mine is doing exact thing and it's driving me nuts.  I can barely stay online and do anything before it crashes.  Very frustrated here!

We have the same problem with my wife's iPad2. The problem started after the last update to v5. The problem of shutting down the app seems to be in all the apps including safari, mail and the other standard apps. Meaning it isn't just the purchased apps, it is all of them. I tried the re-boot, I tried the restore to back-up and updated again, and so far we haven't had any luck fixing the problem.

    Ideas? Help is appreciated.

I am also having this same issue.  Just updated to 5.01.  It now crashes, I cannot restore the ipad (classic).  I keep getting error messages when trying to restore (error message 50), and I'm using a macbook pro to restore from.  This has made my wife's iPad useless.

Summary of what to do when iPad crash suddenly.

    1. Double-click the Home button to see all the programs running in the background

    2. Hold any App down for a second or two until you see the minus sign

    3. Tap the minus sign to close App (program)

    4. Reset your iPad. Hold the Sleep and Home button down for about 10 seconds until you see the Apple logo

I've done everything you mentioned above.  The only thing I haven't tried is throwing it out the window.  My frustrations keep mounting.

Just wondered how many of u received an email from martyfromwalnutcreek about talking to apple people about this problem. After I got the email I tried to log on and reply to post but it said it was deleted. Just so u no I did call apple support about these problem and talk to them about it. They acted like they had NEVER heard of these problems and I must be the only one in America with the problem. When I told the that there were hundreds if not thousands of people on the message boards talking about it I heard complete silence on the phone line. they then wanted to walk me through resetting my iPad back to factory settings so I could start over. They even emailed me instructions on how to do this. I was in the car at the time of phone call.  They said if that didn't solve the problem I would need to send in my iPad. I have not done this yet as I don't really want to wipe everything and then start over. U never get it back the way it was even with sinking it.

Well Apple knows about the problem, but they have no immediate solution to offer, so of course the hotline will never admit that there is a problem, because then they would have to tell the user, 'yes we know, but sorry we can't help you right now'.

That would be too embarrassing so denial is the solution for now. I actually doubt that they will ever admit there was a problem becaus that would not go with the image of 'it just works'.

Do you have MobileMe and icloud on at the same time? Please turn off MobileMe.

Please do a sync through itunes from now on. Do not update using icloud, esp. on weak wireless networks.

Can you elaborate on the problem? Which apps are crashing?

This is rare, although I have not installed iOS 5.01 yet.

I would suggest if you want help from Apple, they need to be able to see your device. Please take it to the genius bar or nearest Apple authorized service provider.

  • David_o99 Level 1 Level 1

    No mobileMe running.

I'm syncing with a cable all the time.

Almost all apps are crashing. Mostly those that get used the most. It is not app specific.

How do you know 'this is rare' if you haven't even installed iOS5?

We already know what Apples support suggest. They suggest the same old whenever they don't have a solution to a problem, they suggest to completely reset your iPad and if that doesn't help to send it in. Hello? Software crashes are not a new problem. iOS5 does not work well with the original iPad (probably due to the limited memory) and the only one who can fix that is those who are working on the iOS development.

Do not make assumptions about what Apple says until you have tried it.

    Let me explain something.

Every OS release is developed, and then handed to a team inside Apple (or Microsoft or whereever) called QA. QA stands for quality assurance. Their job is testing. Particularly inside Apple, something doesn't ship if it doesn't pass QA, and the CEO.

This is also why devices are eventually phased out for OS updates. You cannot install the OS 5 on an older ipod touch for example.

Apple particularly after making mistakes with the iphone 3G, which ran slowly, but did not crash, is probably extra careful now.

But it goes through a second layer of testing. All the app developers test the new OS and it goes through several betas. Apple developers have direct access to the bug reporting tool, sophisticated debugging and diagnostic information through Xcode, Apple's development tool.

This makes me wonder are all your apps up to date. *every* single one of them? Many of those apps had to be updated for iOS 5. It's a major new release. Crashing is one of the symptoms of an unupdated app.

More fundamentally, restores are reversible. Just restore from backup. You will have your ipad back exactly as it was, but you don't want that.

What you want to do is sync, transfer purchases, restore, setup as new ipad, and then sync again to transfer your apps. If you have backed up any files on the ipad using itunes file sharing, the only thing you directly lose are game scores, and most of those are backed up to game center in ios 5.

Restoring will fix the problem. If it does not, Apple will most likely replace your ipad for you. You cannot ask for better customer service than that.

Mine keeps doing the same thing!!!!!!!!

    *ipad 1

    *Every app closes after opened

    *Happend after 5.0.1 update

I HATE THIS!!!!!!!! They need to fix this upgrade now!!!!!

    Did you jailbreak?

Jailbreaking can cause issues like this according go my google searches.

Have you updated all of your apps?

Otherwise, do a restore from the computer, not restoring from backup, and get your apps back via icloud.

I received marty's post via e-mail as well.  IMHO it should have not been removed, I don't see anything offensive or incendiary.  Clearly the iPad crashing problem on iOS 5 is wide spread (a quick google search or even search of these forms will reveal that).

The only solution that worked, though temporary, was to:  (1) initiate a restore via iTunes, (2) do not restore from a backup and (3) give the iPad a new name.  I know the new name shouldn't make a difference, but restores using the same name never produced any noticable change in the behavior of the iPad (maybe some things get put back even if you don't restore from a backup).

This worked for about three weeks (crashing was very infrequent during this time), but in the last two weeks crashing is back on a more frequent basis. In the words of Charlie Brown "...Arrrrrrgggg".

btw: for the record -  device = ipad2 64gb wi/fi (no 3g) black,  never jailbroken, current storage memory usage is under 8gb (lots of free storage space).  Primary crashing apps are 1. Safari and 2. Mail.  Other apps such as Scrabble and Good Reader also crash.
