If you're struggling to find the money to buy the phone in the first place, I seriously doubt you're going to be able to pass the credit check necessary to get a 2 year contract.

If you live in the U.S. drive (or walk or take the bus) down the street to your local AT&T/Sprint/Verizon store and go talk to them. Taxes vary from State to State and County to County. Plans vary depending on how many minutes you need, how much data you need and what kind of text messaging plan you need.

You can get an 8GB iPhone 4 on AT&T (or any other carrier) for $99 plus state and local taxes. The least expensive voice/data plan you can get from AT&T on a new contract is about $40 for 450 minutes a month + $15 for 200MB of data per month. Texting will cost another $20 a month. So it will cost at least $75 per month plus fees and taxes on AT&T, assuming you need texting. $55 per month plus taxes and fees without texting. Verizon and Sprint are comparable. These prices are base on a 2 year contract commitment.

If you can only afford $50 per month including data, I highly recommend you lower your expectations and look into one of the regional carriers with unlimited calling/text/data plans that service your area and have cheap android phones available.

The iPhone is great, but if you can't afford it, don't try.
