Connecting 8.5.1 iMac to 10.5.8 G5 Mac

The two are connected with Ethernet but I can't get file sharing or any other form of communication to work. Have fiddled with innumerable control panel settings, sharing preferences, etc. I can't seem to find any definitive suggestions in earlier discussions on this forum either. Is it actually possible to get file sharing to work between machines of these vintages? Has anyone accomplished that? And if so, how?

Any advice or instructions would be much appreciated.

Okay, please ignore this request. I found - stumbled into - an 8-month old thread on this very same topic in this forum and following the excellent suggestions there plus more diddling with control panels and preferences managed to connect. Quite a task. So I'm happy.

FWIW, I found the key seemed to be changing the user names and passwords on the old machine, a couple of places, to allow logging into the 10.5.8 machine.

Also being careful about getting the right IP address.

And also lots of trial and error.
