Can a old iPod 15gb charge through the computer?

I was wondering if my 15gb iPod (old, before 20gb) can charge through the computer. I am able to charge through the wall charger but it is inconvinient when I have to charge up my iPod just to update it.

Please help me, if there are any links/downloads please post them here.

Jay,

I think you can only charge it with the A/C if the iPod is a Third Generation 15G like mine.

A third generation iPod cannot charge from a computer with the USB connection; you need to use the FireWire connection or the AC adapter to charge it.

I actually only use the firewire cable, so I guess it just doesn't charge through computer. 😟

Some Windows computers don't charge the iPod through Firewire--I do not know if it is specific models or just a bad combination of iPod with computer.

Jay,

Does your Dell have a powered Firewire port? My iPod charges thru the powered Firewire port on my Mac. It does not charge thru the non powered Firewire port on my PC.

Powered Forewire ports usually have 6 pins. The data only are usually 4 pin ports.

Sorry you guys have been very helpful, but just to clairify... I connect using firewire & usb and neither work, I doubt my Firewire is "Powered" but is it possible for a 15gb iPod to charge through PC...not talking about MACS.

If the FireWire is powered, it will charge (Mac or Windows).
