Using Mpeg2 video in iDVD

I have just tried today for the first to use iDVD

Am I correct that you cannot import Mpeg2 into iDVD so I have to convert my video to H264 then import into iDVD where it converts it back to Mpeg2 for DVD players?

Is this just a little, well flawed?

Hi

iDVD is a DVD encoding program so No it can not use .mpeg2 (or any .mpeg formats at all)

Some ailient formats can be used - resulting in that iDVD has to un-code them to thereafter re-encoding them.

• Extreme long times

• Resulting DVD far from Good

I use streamingDV - and use QuickTime or MPEG Streamclip to convert material to this (You need Apple .mpeg2 component $20 about).

To go from DVD to new DVD either

• copy vis Disk Util tool (only home made non copyprotected DVDs) - or -

• Roxio Toast™ - (still only home made non copyprotected DVDs)

My understanding was that it was mpeg2 on DVDs, shouldn't this be easy?

No it is not easy. iDVD can not eat natively it nor can Roxio Toast™ or DVD-Studio Pro.

So it has to be converted one way or another.

I think one can make a folder and that Toast™ can use it from here to make a DVD copy.

But this is no easy and straight forward thing to do.

I would download MPEG Streamclip from the net (free) and if You've bought the mpeg2 component then this should let You convert to streamingDV .dv or H264 and this iDVD can use.

If You just put a DVD into Your Mac it will end up on DeskTop and You can store Your Mpeg2 movies on it - BUT THIS RESULTS IN A - Data-DVD and are not Playable on any DVD-Player and are not a - Video-DVD as is what iDVD and Toast™ and DVD-Studio produces.

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVDs back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. Then you can import them into iMovie and have them as seperate chapters. For that you need mpegStreamclip:

which is free, but you must also have the Apple mpeg2 plugin :

Never convert any video to H.264 that you want to use in iDVD. This codec is highly compressed. You always want to convert your video into the least compressed codec possible. Most people use the Apple Intermediated Codec or ProRes. If your demuxed into raw streams of MPEG2 and audio, it's possible to import them directly into Apple's Compressor and re-burn them to a DVD without an loss.

If you want to edit or change the video then you need convert it to Quicktime. An easier to use alternative to MPEGStreamclip is DVDxDV. It doesn't require the Apple MPEG2 plug-in.
