There is no monthly fee unless you get an iPad with 3G. Then, you can pay a monthly fee for a 3G data plan, but only when you actually sign up for one. A data plan is not required and it can be cancelled when you no longer need it and later added if you find you want one (while traveling, for example).

There will only be a charge if you get a 3G version and sign-up for a 3G service with a provider - and if you buy the 3G version you don't have to sign-up to a provider until if/when you need to use 3G on it. The wifi-only version doesn't have a monthly charge, it's wifi usage should be included in your current wifi/broadband service.


Some apps can also have subcriptions e.g. magazines, newspapers etc
