iphone ios doesnt open in itunes

i just recently purchased iphone 4 ios.when i opened itunes,iphone couldn't recognized by itunes.i recently upgraded itunes to 10.5.1 version.what should i do to resolve this?

iPhone 4, iOS 5.0.1
