restoring iphone 2g without original sim

I need to restore my iPhone 2G but I do not have the original sim card that went with it. I bought it off of eBay and the seller doesn't have the SIM card. Does anyone know if the apple store can restore it for me? Or I'm pretty much screwed?

Thanks for any help.

Or maybe I'm misunderstanding the whole needing the original sim card.

you don't need the original sim to restore an iphone, but you do need an active sim card to activate the iphone. there is however a catch with the original iphone, the server that itunes reaches out to for activating your iphone is managed by AT&T and unfortunately that server is no longer active. now with that said you have two options but before you try any of these make sure you have an active sim which you can get from AT&T if you don't already have one. the first one is that you can call apple and let them know that you have a first gen iphone and want to activate it and they will need to get you to 2 tier support which may be tough and take a very long time and maybe even a little money. the second is that you can go to an apple store (make sure you have an appt. and to be one the safe side make a few appts. in a row because their appts. are only 10 min. long) and the technician at apple can get through to tier 2 support faster and once they do it will be about 24 hours before you will have an active phone.
