iMessage crashing because of extremely long message

My friend posted a REALLY long message in iMessage just to see what would happen, and now whenever I open iMessage it just crashes after freezing for a few minutes or after I close it and open it again. I've tried signing in as a different user, but it still froze. I don't want to restore because I don't like reloading all my apps and music and stuff, so any help? I am using an iPad 1 with iOS 5.0.1 16 gb wifi version. Any help would be much appreciated.

I've got a fix.

Open contacts, go to a contact that is not your friend's contact, tap send message, then it will open up imessage to the conversation. from there u can delete ur friend's conversation and imessages will no longer crash.

go into contacts and delete the contact - don't worry all your conversations will be saved - i sent my friend the "i was born with glass bones and paper skin" monologue in binary code (don't ask it was for the meme) and did this and somehow it did the trick.

worst case scenario you have to restore your phone and back it up on itunes.

Try fully closing the Messages app by double tapping your home screen, which will bring up the most recently used apps (task bar). You'll see a row of the apps you've recently used on the bottom row. With you finger, hold it on any of those apps until they all jiggle. You'll see an X on the upper left side of each app. Touch the X on the Message app (you could close all your recently used apps, in case that is causing an issue). Then touch your home button once to stop the apps from jiggling, then again to bring you back to your home screen. Open Messages and see if it is operating correctly.

Thanks for helping, but I've already tried that with no success along with resetting, restarting, and changing user names.

I'm having this problem, tried closing and restarting app, resetting the iPad.

It crashes as soon as I click, 'choose existing' when I'm about to add a picture.

Is there any solution to this?

Really would prefer not to have take it into an Apple store.

I just did a full restore through iTunes & the problem i mentioned i was having with, imessage crashing when selecting a photo for sending, appears to have corrected itself.

Just thought i'd mention it, just in case it's of use to anyone.

Is there any news on this? My son did this to me today via xmit'ing a huge iMessage with nothing but emicons- about 5 screens worth. I've tried the above with no luck; I don't want to restore the iPod as that takes too long for my patience.
