iPhone magnifying glass mode

Hi Forum.

Mega dumb iPhone 4S question.

When I compose an sms, and I want to place the cursor at an arbitrary point in the text I push and hold, the magnifying glass appears and I can place my cursor.

In the Notes app, this also works but sometimes, the magnifying glass magnifying glass goes into "select full words" mode and I cant place my cursor in one place in the text.

Evidently Im doing something wrong.

What causes the magnifying glass to be in "cursor" or "select full words" mode?

How can I always make it so its in "cursor" mode?

Thanks

Hi Dave,

Thanks for your help but...

actually I found out the reason and it seems what you suggest isnt quite right.....

In Notes, if the cursor is visible and you bring up the magnifying glass with a single tap, its cursor mode.

If the cursor is not visible and you bring up the magnifying glass with a single tap, its select mode.

So it seems....

thank you much
