why do apps disappear from iphone

When I synch my iPhone, my apps disappear from my iPhone. I can find them by going to App Store, Updates, Not on this iPhone but each app then needs to be restored. Any data or settings are lost. When I go to iTunes, my apps are occasionally present but will also disappear when they are deleted fom my iPhone. Any suggestions?
