O2 uk will not unlock the phone for me as I do not have a UK phone number anymore! Is there any other way or have I now got a phone which is worth nothing!

Sorry you don't like the answer, but it is what it is. If you want your phone officially unlocked, you have no choice but to get O2 to authorize its unlocking. If that means re-establishing service, then that's what you'll have to do.
However O2 do unlock UK iPhones
Their webpage covering this is down and has been for several days
This thread has been running on the O2 forum and you may find it has a solution
You have to able to get to the North and you will effectively be on the UK network where you can get the iPhone unlocked with a bit of effort

That would work, except if Peter's statement about the 6 month wait is true...well, you'll have to wait 6 months.

If you can get it back to UK your friend can buy a PAYG sim put £15 on it and make some calls in UK
fill in form and it should be unlocked within 14 days

Huh? First you say O2 is NOT unlocking iPhone 4S's(the OP has an iPhone 4S, according to the profile) for 6 months...now you say 14 days...

Wasn't sure it was a 4S ( are only selling to existing customers at present )if it O2 are not unlocking and historically wait six months from release before unlocking
No guarantee it will be 6 months but certainly not at this time ,they are unlocking other iPhones and normally do it within 14 days as shown in the link OP should have read

any other iPhone yes but hoops to jump through as he is not in O2 UK area
I purchased a phone 4s from O2 uk and I am currently living in Ireland. I am with O2 ireland but the sim is not accepted in the phone. I will not be in England for at least a year, is there anyway I can unlock the phone?
