I never got a refund for MobileMe, and there is no way to go back to it. In terms of value, MobileMe customers paid for a year of service that still hasn't run out. Countering your preemptive "Well then why did you switch," I don't think it's hard to imagine that a company might actually improve a product with a hyped refresh, rather than completely cripple it.

@richadams:

We also do not pay for Gmail, hotmail, Yahoo mail, and many other services. In my experience, I got more than a:
"iCloud: Mail & Notes - Users Affected: Some ????

Users may be unable to access iCloud mail. Normal service will be restored ASAP."

may be unable? (are unable, period!)... ASAP --> That word has not context, definitely meaningless.

We would expect more, like a time, a way to find out it's almost recovered, whatever information that may be more useful than that.

@ MajorMatt, thanks for the link!

Ohhh, and one more thing to add. Apple Support Status Updates should be a LOT more conversational and elaborate a bit more in plain english. It least make it seem like you understand how important email reliability is for us users!!!!

Their status update is a joke:

And trust me, this is from a LONG TIME Apple supporter.

Um, "Users may be unable to access iCloud mail. Normal service will be restored ASAP." seems like pretty plain English to me.

I'm not defending them, but I'm not sure what else they can say other than acknowledge the problem, that they're working on it and it'll be avaialable ASAP. I have yet to see an ISP that ever provides much more info than that. I'm not pleased either, but just sayin'.

I appreciate your optimism, I really do. However for me, ecpecially in this economy, I've continued to put total faith in the Apple experience, from cloud music and photos, to email, to expensive computers and devices...for YEARS. When I belong to a 'club' so to speak, I usually am rewarded with a customer service experience that makes me feel that my business is NECESARY for their exisitence and that any loss of faith in their product is taken very seriously. If their servers weren't ready for the transition to Icloud...they shouldn't have exposed us to its shortfalls. I told myself I'd give Icloud a YEAR to get their crap together, and then I'm gonna pull out if things don't stabilize.

I little bit of a frielndly customer service experience goes a LONG WAY.

Also, to add insult to injury...why are these discussion group emails sneaking through the mail servers and nothing else is? That one made me laugh. It appears that mail is coming back online as I type this. Good day to all! 🙂

You got a refund? How did you manage that?

I've paid $99 a year to Apple for Mobile Me for years, and they still owe me for what I've paid for. I don't think this iCloud thing was ready for prime time when they rolled it out. Including iTunes Match. After paying through the nose, I get to lose iWeb and iDisk - for what? A whole lot more complication, unreliable email, and a terrible browser-based client.

No, no ... not happy at all!

We can agree to disagree. As far as I’m concerned it's a free service...whatever the circumstances of our experience with MobileMe.

Apple contacted me and tens of thousands of other MobileMe users when iCloud became available and gave us a $99 refund for filling out a short form. At the time it seemed like a pretty decent move on their part especially when they didn't have to.

I'm no happier with an outage than the next guy, but in the three decades or so that I've had email I've not once had a provider where there weren't outages. It's frustrating certainly but it is absolutely the nature of the beast. To have expectations otherwise is pure nonsense.

Having more than one email address and service for this very reason is a wise backup. So far email providers have yet to all go down at once...and if they do...well, it’s probably not going to be the first of anyone’s priorities.

Like everyone I do hope they get this resolved sooner than later of course.

What can I say ... I never got such a contact with an offer for a refund. After 40 years in IT, I have a pretty well-informed opinion about how frequently things like this should crash. This whole mess reminds me of Blackberry's more recent reliability, and we all know how that's worked out for them. And, to not post a reasonably timely and accurate Status - well, there's really no excuse for it. Shoot, that type of thing could even be automated. Another poster mentioned they talked to Support an hour into this and even they didn't know anything about it. There are effective ways to anticipate, plan for, staff for, and deal with this type of thing.

Indeed, it sounds like we have similar backgrounds and experiences. I wouldn't disagree with any of what you said there. Sorry you didn't get the refund, it was pretty well publicized, but busy lives and all...

iCloud Mail is coming through for me now (NW U.S.). Phew!
