Cannot connect to internet

I am using a MacBook Pro and all of a sudden I cannot connect to the internet using either Airport or even with a direct Ethernet cable. Two iPads my iPhone my Mom's PC and another iMac all are connecting fine via wi-fi. I am using an Airport Extreme connected to the cable modem. I have tossed my System Configuration folder into the trash to no avail. I have also removed the wi-fi connetion from the Network section of System Preferences and re-added it, nothing works and I cannot connect. It tells me that I have the self-assigned IP address of 164.254.33.221 and will not be able to connect to the internet. Everything worked well and then, poof! I can no longer connect.

I'm gonna keep an eye on this thread, having similar issue. I have several Macs at home, all are able to connect to Airport Extreme with no problems. Yesterday, for no apparent reason, my Mac Mini Server all of a sudden stopped connecting to the internet. WiFi is on, network is selected and has 4 bars, I can even connect to this Mac from one of my others and share the screen - but no internet. I've tried restarting everything but nothing works. I'm stumped...

here's an update on my internet problem: I took my MacBook pro in to have the genius bar at our local apple store have a look. it actually puzzled them, which in some small way made me feel better that it wasn't a simple user error. they finally fixed my Internet problem by wiping the whole system clean and reinstalling the operating system. the only downside is that I will have to reinstall my programs, pictures, music, etc; but at least I have Internet again. good luck everyone.
