Can't use iCloud without iWork apps?

I've done all kinds of testing and searching and just want to verify this one last time:

In order to upload documents and use iCloud's documents in the cloud feature, do I actually have to purchase an iWork app from the App Store? All I'm getting is a splash screen on iCloud.com touting the benefits of iWork and telling me I should buy it for my iDevice.

Correct. In order to make use of it you need the iOS versions of the iWork apps (or a single app.) You can purchase each one on the iTunes App Store for $10.00 each.

Yes, you need the iWork App working on your iOS device (i.e. Pages for a Word document)

I use it on my iPhone & iPad. Works fine., synchro OK

You cannot upload PDF documents

You can appload any document you want. iWork is not "required" for iCloud. Just be aware that if you upload iWork documents to iCloud, but don't have the corresponding apps on your iDevice or Mac, you will not be able to open and edit them.

That is incorrect, if you do not have an iWork app on at least one iOS device, you will be unable to upload any documents to iCloud.

The question was asked if you needed the programs, and it sounds you are all saying as long as you have a program on one of your devices it should be no problem

I have iWork09 on my Mac, I have all 3 programs (Pages, Numbers, Keynote) on my ipad as well, but whenever I hit the iwork button in icloud on the web, all 3 programs act like I don't have the programs installed. They give me 2 buttons to choose from "Learn More" and "Get Numbers for IOS" (or pages... or notebook). If I drag a document onto the webpage like Apple Support says to do, it goes through the process of loading, then it gives an error "there was a problem uploading a spreadsheet. Please try again". I cannot seem to get any documents to upload. What am I doing wrong?

I am logged in correctly to my icloud account and all features working flawlessly. Just can't seem to get iWork to function as advertised 🙂

When I was trying to make this work, it seemed that I had to have one of the apps not only installed on my iPhone but set as "Use iCloud" in its Settings page AND "Documents & Data" had to be turned on. Once I had Pages on my iPhone successfully pushing up to iCloud and visible to my iPad, the icloud.com iWork page was suddenly populated. Even the Keynote and Numbers tabs had lost their ads and showed "No Presentations" and "No Spreadsheets" respectively until I created some.
