My power mac will not recognize my ipad in itunes---instead a camera icon appears. How do I make the ipad show up in itunes?

are you plugging it directly into the box and not a hub or the keyboard?
I now have tried to restore my ipad but there is an error message 1611 and now all I can get on my ipad screen is the plug and the itunes logo...i can't even get back to the normal ipad screen...i am so frustrated --help where do I go from here?

Error 1611: This error may indicate a hardware issue with your device. Follow the steps in this article. Too complicated. I have tired to get help from three people and no one can figure it out. Will have to take it to store tomorrow.
