The phone will only stay on when it is plugged in and it is the screen that says to plug in to itunes. I get the error 2001 when it begins to restore and sets me back to the beginning. ive tried to hard restart it but i cant unplug it or it turns off.

tried what you recommended, but the only thing i have plugged into my mac is the usb plug for the iphone. Im not running any security software either.
OK, you are not using a hub or a keyboard port?
Have you reset the SMC?
Not using a hub or keyboard. just the white charger that came with it directly into the USB port. I have another Iphone and it doesnt seem to have any problem
Ah, useful information. That narrows it to the phone or the cable. I assume you've tried a different cable. Try cleaning the dock connector on the bottom of the phone. A soft new toothbrush works well; also examine it for any dirt you missed or bent pins using a magnifying glass. If that's all clear you may have a defective phone.
It has got wet in the past which might be why it will not hold a charge. Do you think purchasing a new battery may fix this issue?
Probably not. Normally water damage will not hurt the battery, which is sealed, but can damage other components on the circuit board. You should probably just exchange it for a replacement from Apple, which is $199 in the US and comparable in other countries.
