1 HFS volume checked, Volume needs repair.

I have run Disk Utility in the attempt to find out why FCP5 stopped recognizing my Canon ZR400 which I used to use for capturing. After I updated the system with the new QuickTime 7, I started to have all sort of problems which I managed to fix, but this one. FCP5 just crashes when I try using this camera... but it does recognize my DVX100A camera and runs with it without any problem. Why is this happening? Any help please.

This is the message I get every time I run the Disk Utility, Verify Disk.

---- <message start here>----
Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit

1 HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair
---- <message ends here> ----

.. once its pot the problem, a pop up window appears and reads:

"First Aid failed
Disk Utility stopped verifying "Macintosh HD" because the following error was encountered: The underlying task reported failure on exit."

Is there any relation from this error to FCP5 not recognizing the Canon ZR400 which used to recognized?

Any help will be highly appreciated.

hi roman

boot up from either your installer disc (which includes the drive utility) or from disk warrior (which imo is an absolute essential) and do your repairs from there.

you can't effectively repair a disk which has open files (which is always the case for a hard drive you've booted from).

does the camera behave this way using both front & rear fw ports?

Max,

Thank you for taking your time to help me.

I am not sure what the 'installer disc' or 'disk warrior' are. How can I boot from them and what are some specific steps to follow? Is there a document that explain and guide through this process of trouble shooting?

About the front & rear fw ports; I always had it connected to the front and did not work with the Canon but with the DVX100; I have also tried connecting it to my Lacie HD, which is connected to the back fw800 port, and that did not work. So to accurately answer your question, I unplugged the 23" Display's fw cable and plugged in the Canon and it worked. So, I the computer does recognize the Canon ZR400 using the rear fw port.

The problem with the Disk Utility persist.

Thank you so much for your support,

Roman

glad to hear that the fw issue is resolved.

your mac came with a mac os software installer disc (possibly panther, possibly tiger). stick it in your dvd drive and restart holding down the c key. when it starts up you will be able to select disk utllity from a drop down menu. make your repais from there and restart (don't install anything).

disk warrior is arguably the best repair app out there and you should invest in a copy. it comes on a boot cd that allows you to repair and disk catalog issues.

again, boot up holding down the c key to run this. be aware that your mac will take significantly longer (up to a couple of minutes) to boot up running from cd.

good luck.
