... comparable to AppleWorks [6.2], suitable for Mac OS X 10.6.8 ?

Most likely - I'm guessing, a fairly often submitted question:

Is there an application anywhere comparable to AppleWorks [6.2], suitable for Mac OS X 10.6.8 ?

— To this point, I've been satisfied enough sticking with the original.

But with having to re-open AW [6.2] .... (which I certainly do like quite a bit.), .... between chosing different of its main features operations, ....

.. this, with its having - at least apparently, .... lead to some crash-like symtoms where running and while doing something more recently, ...

.. has lead me "here", to begin searching for something other: .... and, as I've pointed to above, hopefully at least somewhat "comparable".

Why was it ever abandoned, in the first place. ... Who can "really" tell. (?)

Appreciate your time.

If you don't have v6.2.9 you should update to it - http://support.apple.com/downloads/AppleWorks_6_2_9_for_Mac

That version is stable on OSX 10.6.8, but if you are having problems you should also trash (user)/Documents/AppleWorks User Data/Starting Points/Recent Items as this tends to fill up with aliases of opened documents and slow everything up. You should empty it periodically.

That done you should be OK: there is no single application which can replace AppleWorks. This article examines alternatives:

You should be aware that AppleWorks will not run under Lion: and that nothing will open Database or Paint documents, so if you are thinking about upgrading to Lion at any point you must export these documents first. More details on that in the article.

These are the File Format options I get when I do a 'Save As' on a spreadsheet:

User uploaded file

I would have thought Office 2011 would have opened any of the Excel formats listed there. If not you would have to use ASCII text, but of course this won't bring over any calculation fields, only their results.

Otherwise, Numbers will open AppleWorks 6 spreadsheeets and can save or export to Excel format.
