Epson scan.app quits after each scan

Epson Perfection V600 connected to iMac using 10.6.8

Scan.app opens fine. After a scan is complete the app quits immediately. Wash rinse repeat.

Image capture works no problem.

Went through 90 minutes with Epson support in the Philipines and their conclusion is that it is a Mac OS 10.6.8 issue.

Unistalled the software, repaired permissions.

Appreciate any suggestions.

Dnorth12-

Don't know if this will help but I had same problem, I found for me the solution

was to not use the "app" but rather use/open "preview" under applications.

Open preview and select file/import from scanner/"your scanner"

This resolved my scanner use problem...someone else told me that epson never upgraded it's

"app" since tiger for mac's....makes since because my old tiger o/s ran the app fine...once I upgraded

too snow leopard....no workie.... 🙂

Hope this helps.

I have the same scanner and have not experienced problems in 10.6.7 on a mini with 8GB. The only issue I've had was at set up when it refused to work with the USB cable from my old scanner but was fine with its own.

Have you checked you have the latest Epson software?

Have you been doing straight scans or including any processing (eg sharpening) with the scan?

I shouldn't put too much stock into that. It's their way of saying, "We can't fix it, so it must be someone else's problem".

Image capture works no problem

Then I'd be inclined to say that it's an issue with the Epson software. Just to be sure, check that you connect the scanner directly to the Mac, and not through a USB hub, that you are using a good quality USB cable, and remove all other USB peripherals which can be removed. Also, make sure that you have write permission to the folder used by the Epson app for temp storage.

You could also test VueScan. In recent years, I've been distinctly underwhelmed by the quality of Epson's Mac software. I don't even bother installing it -- I just use Image Capture or Preview.

I had a similar on-going problem with a Canon all-in-one for months. Printing, both USB and WiFi worked fine, but the scanner app (USB or WiFi) crashed every single time with an EXC_BREAKPOINT (SIGTRAP) error. Canon issued several updates, but the problem never went away.

Then I saw a post suggesting deletion of the specific printer and scanner apps AND the related printer and scanner plist files. Deleting only the app (by dragging to the trash) does not affect the plist files, and that's (plist) where the problem was.

Once I reinstalled the apps for both printer and scanner, problem was solved.

I have installed the most recent Epson driver more than once after walking through w/Espon support all the files that needed to be deleted to trash the app.

No special processing while scanning. Just using the full auto mode and also the professional mode. Also tried saving in different formats, since starting this thread, and it still quits the moment the scan is finished.

Using Preview actually brings in the Image Capture app. Although it does not quit, I am not happy with the scan results. Things turn kind of flat. I do like the results of Epson scan.app for my purpose.

Have plugged the usb cable directly to the computer.

I think that it is an issue with OS 10.6.8 and Epson software compatibility. I believe that Epson should update the drivers, but aren't likely to do so.

So I guess I have to decide whether I want to put up with restarting each time or use Preview/Image Capture and tweek each image after the scan.

Thanks everyone for responding. I appreciate your input.

No related plist file found. (if you have a name of one that I could search for, that might be useful).

I did try using a different user account and got the same behavior.

One last thing I am going to try later this evening is bringing my laptop into the mix and see if it reacts the same way. It has never had any scanning software installed on it.

I did try Vuescan, to answer a previous question that I missed, but my trial period is expired and I wasn't in the need of spending the money for it. I may be in the need afterall. We'll see.

Looking I found two .plist which may be relevant, but note I have no idea whether they are or not.

Search doesn't seem to show them so go to:

Mac HD > Users > Home > Library > Preferences > com.epson.scan.standalone.plist and com.epson.scanner.ica.plist

You say you are running 10.6.8. Did you upgrade to that or did your Mac come with it installed? If an upgrade did you run the V600 on the previous version with/without problems? Can you revert to an earlier version of 10.6 on another HD to see if you still have problems. I stuck at 10.6.7 after reports of many Epson problems (printers) on 10.6.8

Found the plist files and they were recent, but I tossed them anyway.

Don't recall when 10.6.8 came out. Bought the scanner in January 2011. Never had to do multiple scans as I am doing now. Don't know the answer to your question, but don't remember this being as issue previously.

I downloaded 10.6.7 and the combo version, just in case. I don't think I can do a downgrade with 10.6.8 in place. Although I am sure I could do a clean install. But I see a big headache involved in going that route.

Tried the laptop with 10.6.8 and ended up with the same result. Immediate quit after scan.

I also have an Epson 3800 that runs fine.

The point of using a new user account -- which is brand new with default settings -- is to make sure that none of the old, incompatible, or corrupt prefs and caches in the user domain are causing the problem. If using a different account and/or the laptop satisfies this condition, then the problem lies elsewhere. But, of course, if you synch your laptop with your desktop, then all bets are off.

I apologise for belabouring the obvious, but you have installed the latest Epson drivers, haven't you? I mean the recent Apple update Epson Printer Drivers v2.9 OS X. (Although available as a separate download, it's best to install it using Software Update.) You can check the version of your scanner driver against the listing in Apple KB HT3669. You did say that you installed the driver available on Epson's site; but Epson America says that, "The latest Mac OS X 10.6 or 10.7 driver for your Epson product is available only via Apple's Software Update.", and, in this instance, I'd take them at their word.

Belabour away. I'll take any help I can get.

First off the laptop and desktop are not synced so no file sharing there.

The HT3669 link shows the driver number of 5.3.14. I admit that I don't know where to look on my desktop to compare that number.

I always do the software updates as presented by Apple. I have to assume that the latest is installed. I have downloaded specific Apple update for Epson driver per the link you presented, but have not installed it as of yet.

Just to be clear I downloaded this file for the Epson Scan app.

I always do the software updates as presented by Apple.

Then you should have the latest version. Although I would still install the separate update, just in case the drivers were overwritten with older versions when you tried to re-install the Epson software.

But it occurs to me that I may have completely mis-read your OP. You said there

After a scan is complete the app quits immediately.

I assumed you meant Epson Scan crashed as soon as it completed scanning. Is my assumption correct -- or does the app do a normal quit when if finishes scanning?
