Iphone 4s white - pictures hazed with flash

Its not related to whether your iphone is black or white - its basically a design defect by Apple and they still hav'nt bothered to correct it. I had a black iphone 4 which had the same problem and now my new black iphone 4s is just as bad when taking pictures with a flash. Every picture taken using the flash has that white haze and there's nothing we can do about it. Now I use my wife's blackberry for taking pics at night and use the iphone for day pics. Really ***** that after all this time and adding an 8 mp camera Apple still cant get it right.

It's down to the design of the 4s.

Apples own description highlights its fault. The flash does haze off the white.

Personally I find that the auto correct on the edit option of the picture does a good enough job to get by.

Thanks for that auto-correct suggestion. It does a decent job to get by while Apple works out a fix. Its really not rocket science so I wonder why apple cant get the camera right.

My photo were getting so very whited out that the autocorrection was not adequate at all. One post in another forum suggested it might be the sensors are getting reflection back from the edges of the case around the camera lense and flash. I took a Sharpie marker and blacked the purple edge of the case that surrounded the lenses and my photos are actually coming out much better in flash mode. So the case rim may actually impact the photo flash reflectance back and cause the photos to come out very washed out white. They are not 100% better, the flash photos are now approaching acceptable.

I have this problem Too, and I have a white 4s. I read some other guy About painting the "purple" edge around the camera, but I don't really feel like vandalizing my phone, nor I can find that edge, it's all incased. The auto correction tool after the shoot solves it too pretty well but I completely solved the problem, 100% no blurr, removing my silicon case. Just in case I'm going to paint the edge of the case around camera and flash, to avoid all reflections with the case on. Going to take some pics to try it out and I'll update you later on

As it turned out, I had not removed a little clear plastic film that was inside of the iFixit back I installed on my white iPhone. Once it was gone my pictures were clear, as expected.

I had the same issue from day 1 ! My pictures taken by day were beautiful, but at night or when taken with the flash, they all came out hazy. Some I was able to fix up with "PicEditor", but most I did not. I was very frustrated and dissapointed with the phone. But...I figured it out now!

The flash seems to refelect off your fingers, so try not to place your fingers anywhere on the side of the phone where the camera and he flash are located. It worked like a charm for me, I have perfect night pictures now!!! You do need to take off any casing you might so the flash does not to reflect back on that either.

I do think Apple made a serious design mistake here, but thank god I found this solution to work for me. Hope they will make a change to it in their next model. Good luck with it!

In my situation, my final conclusion is that the bright white-out was due to the case. With my old case, when I took a Sharpee pen and colored the rim of the case around the flash black, the flash photos improved dramatically. My wife's had not problems with her, so when I compared, the hole in the case for the camera and flash was also much larger. I so eventually replaced my case with one that already has a black rim around the camera / flash and a much larger gap around them to minimize the reflective changes from the case itself. Much better results, though I leave flash off unless I know I need it.

Also a much better camera app than the Camera that comes with the phone is Camera+ for $0.99. I love the photo results and the editor that comes with it.

Hey.. thanks for that great observation. I just realised that its the flash reflecting off my fingers too. A simple way to avoid it is to use the click option on the touchscreen instead of the volume + for clicking the pictures. Cant believe what a difference it makes. Thanks again,

I got scared when I took one test picture in a dark place.

Thanks to this post I tried to remove my white case and took another shot. Bingo!

In my case I've tried several cases, I had problems with to of then, specially the white one!

i havnt really taken photos with my camera till today (iphone 4s) realized that with the flash my pictures were unacceptable, not even viewable, then i realized i have a screen protector on the back of my phone that all new iphones come with! so i cut away the corner of the protector where the camera and flash is located, and wot do you know.......perfect pictures! do not try and say it is a design fault. apple would not be so stupid as to make a phone where the flash does not work, i have a countless number of freinds with iphones, and every single one has had the same problem until the protector was removed......not one person ive even spoke to has said they have this problem after removing the protector.......hope this helped

With or without screen protectors, rubber case, my finger (yes lol)...still whitish photos. I don't know if my iPhone 4s is different than yours but the problem persists. I CANNOT RELAY ON NIGHT TIME PHOTOS WITH FLASH.

In my case ... it was the protective case we added to the phone. I spent time looking for the secret plastic film that I had somehow missed removing. Lucky I didn't damage the back digging around trying to find it. But when I removed the case and compared test shots (a rather thick rubberized protective case .... and it already had a black border around the camera opening) ... that made all the differance in the world. Guess I'll have to get a new case or go around with a naked phone.

I has the same problem with the flash, I also had installed one of those screen protector kits, after removing the guard on the back the problem was solved :)
