how do I keep photos and videos on an external hard drive and run the application on the macbook

I am running out of space on my Macbook and would like to move all my photos and videos to an external hard drive to free up disk space. How do I designate those drives as the destination drive when running the application (iPhoto, iMovie) on the Macbook.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

All these links were useful. Thank you. Now I have run into the problem of the original source files on the Mac. After copying the event source media to the external (it copied, but not moved) hard drive and moved the project media to the hard drive I trashed it (did not delete yet). Then I opened iMovie, found the project on the external drive, but it would not play. It said that the source media was missing. i would like to delet the trash to make room on my Mac.

Yes, that's the normal procedure when dragging to a different disk/partition. That actually copies the data, whereas a "move" on the same disk just changes the indexes. Among other things, it prevents data loss if something goes wrong with the copying.

Ah, I see the link I gave you was for iMovie '08. 😟
