I opened my mail application and went to quit/close it down and it wouldn't. So then I tried to shutdown and logoff and the computer wouldn't shut down or anything because the mail application was open. So since I can't quit mail, I can't shutdown the computer...

Did you try and Force Quit? Click on the Apple in the top left corner and scrol down to Force Quit, then select your mail application.

Just in case anyone is stumped out there with the same problem, all you have to do is press:
"option, control, and esc." This will force quit. Just choose the application, in this case mail, and force quit.

This helps... but partially.
The Operating system is unable to shut down the computer by itself unless the user forces it to quit. There is something wrong with the program. We shouldn't have to do that every time that we want to shut down our computer 😟 I am very upset with that to be honest.. I have just bought a new computer and this is a pain. I can´t even schedule my computer to shut down automatically because it doesn't....
I had this issue and got frustrated having to force quit all the time.
I usually quit all programs with shortcut keys.
MAIL now quits everytime if I just click Mail-Quit Mail
Don't use shortcuts to quit it and it will be fine
so are you still having to do the force quit so you could close the mail app or were you able to fix it I feel as if it's a virus of some sort I ran my virus software and it detected something and now it he raised the virus but I'm still having the problem of my mail app not closing and I having to force quit it
mail application won't quit/shutdown so computer won't logoff or shutdown either.. how do you fix that?
