Like many people, I'm dealing with the "waiting for activation" iMessage problem.
In my case however, I'm installing on a SIM-Less iPhone 4 with iOS 5.01. It's my old phone, and for the moment my son uses it as an iPod Touch.
I know iMessage can work with iPod Touch and iPad and, of course, an iPhone with a SIM. What's less clear is whether the current version can work for an iPhone without a SIM.
Has anyone heard of this working?

I know this is true in theory, I'm wondering if anyone has succeeded without a SIM in an iPhone. It is supposed to work this way with an iPod Touch. Have you personally succeeded at this?

yes. The iMessage that comes with iOS 5, does not depend on the SIM card. The only thing you need for the iMessage, is a apple ID and Internet. 🙂
Yes it works on an iPod Touch.
You'll need to put a working SIM in to set it up so that it can confirm the setup via SMS then you can remove it.
It started working a day or two after it failed [1].
I never put a working SIM in, I was afraid of messing up another account by doing that.
Since then it has worked well.
