running package scripts

I updated Safari easily on my iMac running 10.7.2, but my MacBook Pro has been hanging on "Running Package Scripts" for 20 minutes now. It's also updated to 10.7.2.

Any advice? Should I just turn it off and hope it boots normally?

Thanks in advance.

I finally managed to reboot the machine. It seems okay, but I have Safari 5.1.1

I don't want to try to update the software until I know there won't be any additional problems. Again, any advice?

Re-invigorated by @cloza's success I restarted my iMac and retried the update (second time around) but still no joy. However, I then wondered if the update was scanning the filesystem so I rebooted a third time, ejected my 750GB USB external drive (which also has Time Machine backups on it if at all relevant) and the update took no problem, completing in less than a minute or so. So, it would be useful to understand whether those people having problems have USB connected drives/devices like I had? Anyway, Safari 5.1.2 all OK now, let's hope it's a little more stable than 5.1.1 which seemed to continually freeze on my iMac!

I had the same problem, but was able to get 5.1.2 installed as follows:

1. In Finder, choose "Go / Goto Folder..."

2. Type in "/Library/Updates"

3. Select all the files in this folder and move them to the Trash (you can always put them back if I'm wrong)

4. Choose "Software Update..." from the Apple Menu in the upper left

It should re-download your update and this time the install will probably go fine. As a software engineer, this sort of problem seems very un-Apple. The software update process should be verifying downloads before installing them, but apparently is not doing it correctly.

Exact same issue on iMac running 10.7.2. Tried three times to update to Safari 5.1.2 and iTunes 10.5.3. Every single time I would get stuck at "Running package scripts" - I even left it overnight on the third try to no avail. Each time I would just do the hard shut down (holding down the power button for a few seconds), and then start the iMac back up and it would resume to normal operation (yet with no updates).

Then, just now, I turned off Time Machine in the system preferences, ejected/unmounted my 2 TB external HD that is the Time Machine backup, I unplugged the USB cable from the back of the iMac, then re-ran Software Update to re-download these two updates and attempt the re-install.

Machine rebooted, ran the update in five minutes or so, then I logged back into my user account, plugged my USB external HD back in, turned Time Machine back on, re-selected the disk, and I'm up and running!

Glad to know I could get the update done unplugging the external drive. But such a hassle getting there.
