Adding a copyright to photo

Hello,

I'm starting a business doing photography. I was looking on Aperture to see if there is a way that I can add my copyright to a photo that I want to post online so people can't steal my photos. I couldn't find anything but maybe I'm looking under the wrong name. I'm fairly new to the Aperture software. I hope I don't have to upgrade to Adobe software in order to do this. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You can add a copyright to the IPTC metadata (there's a field for that) but what I think you are actually looking to do is add a watermark to you images. (Actually you should do both)

Aperture is able to do that also. Here is a short video from Peachpit describing the procedure Aperture Quick Tip - Using Watermarks While the video refers to a Aperture 2 it applies to 3 also.

You likely know this, but if not, you should 🙂 . In addition to adding a watermark -- and filling in the metadata for your contact information, the copyright, and the usage terms -- you should put on-line the smallest sized image that you can. When you post a file to a public Web site you are publishing your work in a digital format. You are, in essence, giving it away. Your copyright notice and your watermark will both give you a small amount of protection, but not much. The advantage of posting only small files is that your work can't be printed well -- the small file is of much lower quality than a full-size image file. PIck a size limit that is big enough to be useful, but not big enough to be printed well (if you are selling prints). I am wary of posting anything larger than 1,000 pixels in either dimension.
