Does anyone know why my mac always opens applications on startup? I understand that it opens applications that were open at time of shutdown, but a number of apps open regardless.
I have itunes and an automaticd shutdown app set to launch on startup, but VLC, System Preferences and Safari all launch on startup, even when I check 'don't restore windows' when shutting down.
Any ideas?

Because you enabled resume in the System preferences. This is on by default in the General Apple menu -> System preference:
You need to go to system pref's-users and groups-click on your user you are experiencing problems with-login items-click on the apps you don't want to start at startup the click the '-'
Thanks for trying, but I have that unchecked already.
The problem is that these apps are not in my login items (read my original post) and I don't see a way to 'ban' applications from opening on startup...
You should not uncheck them you should click the little minus button under the window with all the startup apps.
It is quite wierd that they just start up.
I would take my Mac in to a retailer to have a look.
