Weird display artifacts after disconnecting from external monitor

Hi everyone

I have been experiencing weird display artifacts in Application Switcher/Dashboard after I disconnect from an external monitor. I started having this problem after I upgraded my MacBook Pro (mid-2010, Intel Core i5 with NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 256 MB) from Snow Leopard to Lion. It might be an issue with Lion or it might just be an issue with my laptop.

The best way to describe this "weirdness" would be through a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ueoS583PuJA

The problem is reproducible. It happens after I disconnect from my external monitor. I notice this problem with both my monitors (Dell 20 inch and Dell 24 inch).

The problem used to be worse. The weird effect used to happen when I was using dual-monitor mode. When a window straddles both monitors, half of the window (the half on my MacBook Pro) exhibits the weird display issue. Fortunately, I managed to fix it by using deleting the Display Profiles for the external monitors (found in /Library/ColorSync/Profiles/Displays).

Needless to say this problem is very annoying. It also makes using the Dashboard impossible since the "dark" widgets makes it hard to read (especially in Dictionary). Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I have the same problems. I thought it was a problem of the LG display at work, but I have several displays and macs too, and I have seen the graphic distortions with my MacBook Pro 7.1 running Lion and the Cinema Display HD 24".

The graphic distortions that I see are:

- The app switcher

- The spotlight widget

- The Apple menu

- Application windows

- Some of the text displayed

Exactly the same issue here. I have a MacBook Pro 15'' mid 2010 with a NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M.

My problem started with dark icons on the task switcher as described on the original post. Then a little while later when connecting to a secondary monitor I got for the first time the color distortions. This was in the task switcher, but also for whole application windows. Did not think much about it and thought and thought it was a glitch. Restarted the computer and te problem went away temporarily. Now I start getting the color distortion even without secondary monitor.

What's going on?

Funny that you mentioned this. After reporting the problem here (see above), it was ok for a while. Yesterday I was at a conference and was supposed to give a presentation. Once I connected to the projector the problem started again. Luckily it only happend during command-tab switching. I think I would have gone ballistic if all apps including keynote would have been affected again.

So the problem seems indeed to be connected with external monitors/projectors. Keynote presenters watch out for this problem.

I have similar problems.

After reading this I put the com.apple.ColorSyncCalibrator directory from ~/Library/Caches into the trash, and then I switched users, and switched back to my standard user, and everthing is working for now. I will report more if the issue comes back. I didn't remove any of the other direcrtories because they were from non-apple related and non-display related sources.

My macbook pro model is MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011)

Thanks for all of the replies.

Cheers,

David

It turns out that the fix was temporary. I came back to my computer at work today and after working for a few hours my screen started getting wonky. Particularly, all of the finder windows became distorted.

I would prefer not to revert to Snow Leopard, as I enjoy many of the features of Lion. However, I am dependent on using multiple screens for my work, so I would like a fix for this ASAP.

Thanks,

David
