Can't install iTunes - Error 1606

I once had iTunes working. Then I "updated" my Nano. iTunes stopped working. I removed it and attempted to reinstall latest version from Apple site. The installation fails with the Error Message "Error 1606: Could not access network location [IPODDIR]\bin". I have worked through the steps outlined in the help doc. All settings look OK, i.e.- no unexpected drive letters. I have removed Norton Internet Security. Any new ideas would be appreciated.
