I turn my ringer/volume on, I still don't hear ringtones when someone calls and I can only hear music with earbuds. Checked settings, all appears normal. Just nothing coming from the speaker. Phone not even a month old. Help!

Have you also checked settings>general>accessibility>incomming calls and set to default.
Yes, mute switch disengaged. By all appearances, the volume is on, and on high. When I put earphones in the sound is fine. Last night I put the earphones in and removed them and the sound came back. But then switched mute on/off again, it went right back to being permanently mute even though mute is off.
Good call. Checked this, is set on Default. I am thinking I must have done something without realizing it - but I haven't made any changes or recent downloads or anything I can think of. The mute is disengaged, volume on high, won't play music, can't hear incoming calls, and my alarm only vibrates. It's like the external speaker just decided to stop working last night. Read up the trouble-shooting stuff, none of the scenarios seems to fit. No debris in my earphone port, bluetooth not on...
OK - so after I did the reset, there was no immediate change. I kept trying to play music, putting the volume all the way up, all the way down, flipping it back from mute to un-mute, all of these things over and over again...finally, a few minutes ago almost when I was about to give up, it just began playing music. Then when I locked the phone i heard the familiar "click". So, it appears it just decided to work again. I am not muting anymore. Will completely turn it off when I need to. Still think something wrong with phone, since it takes a LOT of fussing and fiddling to get the speaker to work after just putting it on mute.
i have the opposite problem, just like that, my volume wont go up or down, it responds to the volume buttons but it shows no bar and it doesnt generates any sound, i can open itunes or anything but it doesnt shows the volume bar. Also i go to the shortcut with double tapping the home button and it also shows
No volume bar. Moved everything and stayed the same, the ringtone does sound but thats all.
And just like that it started working again. Happened twice, any idea what it can be??
I also just encountered this problem yesterday did the iOS upgrade to see if would help it worked after the upgrade but as I had Pandora playing the sound suddenly went off. I have done a reset, taken headphones in and out, phone is not on mute phone speaker works and ringer works but no notifications or sounds on youtube, pandora, videos etc. Works fine with headphones though. Sound comes on and off at any sudden time very odd and annoying! FIrst time buying any apple products and was very weary about it at first perhaps i may just invest in a WIndows phone.

Do you have the mute switch engaged? It's the little slider just above the volume buttons. If you see orange, your phone is on mute.
I powered it off and on multiple times as well. Nada.
Try a reset, press and hold on/off button and home button for about 10 seconfs until apple logo appears. It might help.
Yes, tried this too to no avail.
Last resort try settings>general>reset>Reset All Settings. If that doesn't work I'm not sure what else to try.

Hey I had the same problem, if you haven't already try taking the plastic screen cover of the front speaker :) might work.
My Volume automatically turns off and when i turn my switch then hit alarm
