Q: Hi, Can I install snow leopard on a partition alongside lion?

Hi, as lion no longer supports .sit files, many of which i have and need, can I install snow leopard on a partition alongside lion? On to that, does anyone have a fix for the .sit files by any chance? :-)

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.1)

Yes.  You can go into Disk Utility and create a new partition and then install Snow Leopard to this new partition.

    Hope this helps

Yes, it can be done.  My system is set up with dual, bootable, partitions. One is for 10.6 Snow Leopard, and the other is for 10.7 Lion. I use Lion almost all the time, however, if there's a PowerPC program I need to access, I can boot to the Snow Leopard partition and use it there.

You cannot run an OSX version earlier than what your Mac shipped with without using something like Parallels where it becomes an emulated or virtual OS not running Natively as the Operating System.

The only time you can run an OS older than what the Mac came with is if you have a Mac that was produced right around the time the newer OS was introduced - so you would have to check with Apple on your specific build number. Having said that, I believe I read that early/mid 2011 iMacs could still run Snow Leopard - since it has now been almost  a year and a half since Lion was introduced, I don't know if any newer released Macs could still run SL.

If you want to spend the $20 on it, purchase a retail copy of SL and see if you can install it on an external drive - if that is successful and you can actually boot from it, then great. If not, you'd be out $20 and the time you spent on it.

Do I know the reason for what? If you mean running an earlier OS on a Mac - it has never been possible except for the machines that were manufactured right around the time the new OS was introduced (because they still had the old hardware/firmware before it was changed). I read about the early 2011 iMacs in one of the threads here - I could not find it right now.

How old is your Mac? As I said, you need to figure out the build number of your machine and talk to Apple to see if that build supports SL. Here are some build numbers:

Here is one of many earlier threads:

    https://discussions.apple.com/message/18304136#18304136

I suggest you do a search here for "run snow leopard on lion" - there have been countless threads, some with very good information.

Caantrigo, please open a new thread on your issue, as you're hijacking OPs thread.

If the OP is still following this thread:

.sit files can be UnStuffed with Stuffit Expander, which is listed as working with Lion and presumably will work with Mountain Lion:

    http://www.stuffit.com/mac-expander.html

Presumably you are working with an older version of Stuffit Expander which requires Rosetta, which is no longer included with Mountain Lion.

Another article that describes your situation in more detail is:
