Why won't AirPlay work over College network with Apple TV 2 and an iPad 2?

We are trying to get AirPlay working between the Apple TV 2 and an iPad 2 on our College network. The aim is to allow teachers to walk around the classroom mirroring what's on the iPad screen to the projector (via Apple TV).

We have an enterprise network and our usual WiFi SSID uses radius authentication. Obviously Apple TV 2 doesn't support enterprise setups so we created a new SSID that requires WPA authentication. I managed to connect both Apple TV 2 and the iPad 2 to this network.

The problem we are having is that I can't get the AirPlay icon to appear on the iPad. I can ping Apple TV and iPad from a machine on our network and I can ping Apple TV directly from the iPad.

It seems as though our network maybe preventing something getting through but I don't know what.

Does anybody have any suggestions as to what might be causing the issue, or perhaps some advice on what else we can try?

I have connected the same Apple TV and iPad 2 devices over a vanilla router and AirPlay works fine so the hardware isn't the issue. Both devices have the lates firmware too.

The problem is that many enterprise wireless networks suppress multicast traffic in order to maintain the perfromance of the wireless network in the presense of 100's-1000's of wireless devices. Multicast traffic is required in order for MDNS to work.

Airplay and MDNS are not enterprise ready protocols, so I would expect pushback from your wireless network admins.

Use a cable.

If you are using enterprise wifi encryption, it isn't going to work.

Do you know which ports in particular need opening? I have compiled a list of AirPlay ports from the Apple website:

80 - Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP)

443 - Secure Sockets Layer (SSL, or "HTTPS")

554 - Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP)

3689 - Digital Audio Access Protocol (DAAP)

5353 - Multicast DNS (MDNS)

Any others that I should be aware of?

As I mentioned in my first post, we were using radius authentication (enterprise) but we setup a new SSID with WPA authentication (not enterprise) which Apple TV and iPad both successfully connected to.

If both devices can successfully connected to the network then perhaps the problem lies with something we are blocking?

Thoughts?

Configuring your Firewall should be as simple as 'allowing access for iTunes', however if you wish to manually check the ports used yourself, the specific ports are:

80 TCP (http)
123 TCP/UDP (time server)
443 TCP (https)
554 TCP/UDP (rtsp)
3689 TCP (daap)
5353 UDP (mdns)

To make this work you just need to hardwire the Apple TV. If they are mapped correctly the ipad should still be able to see it on the network.

Hi,

I am i maths and physics teacher and I have the same problem. For now I connect the Apple TV to my iPad's personal hotspot, which works quite well. I'd still like to find a solution for this though...
