AT&T requested my iPhone to be unlock and Apple denied the request

Hi, I called AT&T to get my iPhone unlocked (because when I bought it, the ATT salesperson said that because Im an international student in the states they would unlock it for me after 6 month into contract). I finally called and ATT said they do not know how to do it, that they would call apple and ask, I was able to listen the conversation between ATT rep and an Apple Support person. Apple denied AT&T the possibility of unlocking my device or any other. What should I do?

iPhone 4, iOS 5

You were lied to by the AT&T salesperson. AT&T themselves say publicly and explicitly that they do not provide unlocking services for iPhones.

Apple has nothing to do with the matter.

Sorry, but you'll need to sell your iPhone to a US user and buy another one, either officially unlocked (available only directly from Apple) or in the country in which you reside.

Regards.

it was bought at an ATT Kiosk. My contract does not even mention that my phone cannot be unlock as most customers contracts do.

I truly dont understand why if ATT is willing to unlock it, why would they call apple and apple would refuse to unlock it?

And it is apple who unlocks iphone, if you research a little and go into vodafone uk, 3 uk, or any company that offers the iphone unlock service you are gonna see that they send the unlock request to apple (it is very streight forward).

AT&T is not willing, as per their own statement in the link I posted above. Anyone at AT&T who is telling you that Apple is the one refusing to do an unlock is lying to you.

Read what you yourself posted: "they send the unlock request to apple". Again, the carrier must do that or there's nothing Apple can do, and AT&T, as they say themselves, will not do so for any reason.

The rep did not know his or her own business, not uncommon with AT&T phone personnel, and was asking for something Apple knew that AT&T does not grant. This is quoted verbatim from AT&T's own web site:

Unlocking your iPhone in order to transfer service to another carrier

Consistent with the Terms & Conditions you agreed to when you signed up for service, AT&T customers cannot unlock their iPhone to work on another network. Unlike some of our major competitors, AT&T uses GSM technology. iPhones designed to work on AT&T's network will not work on another carrier's network.

AT&T does not allow unlocking. There's nothing more that can be said and no point in further discussion.

I believe the people need to continue discussing this, because I trully believe that apple and at&t are in it together, but both deny responsibility. Let me relay an absurd experience I just had:

I went to ATT store and asked if I can get the iPhone unlocked, the employee said no, but if I go to the apple store they will sell me an unlocked phone at the subsidized price! Excited, I called the store, an apple store employee on the phone said this is impossible, due to the sales process, BUT 4S IS a world phone and can be unlocked to be used in any country.

I then called ATT *611 number, there an employee told me that Apple phone can not be unlocked, but was very open about unlocking Android phones. He suggested a number of new LTE phones I could buy and unlock instantly! I then asked about iPhone again, and he suggested that he connect me to the apple support. He then transferred me to what seemed like the regular apple support numer.

Of course, I did not even hope about asking wether or not iPhone could be unlocked, so I just asked about buying an unlocked phone with the subsidized $199 price. He told me this is not possible, but with a rather 'straight face' told me that i can call AT&T and request to have my iPhone unlocked. That now, with 4S, this is possible, because and I quote '4s is a world phone' he then also referred me to the website.

At this point, my jaw dropping, I asked if he meant I could use it everywhere in the world with AT&T service, or if I could actually swap the sim card inside for one form another company. The man said I could put any carrier sim in the iPhone 4s, once again repeating the world phone motto. He then very clearly and matter of factly said that Apple provides all carriers with tools to unlock any iPhone 4s, but the option to do so is with the carrier and apple can not comment on any specific carriers policies. I asked if he had personally spoken or knows anyone who had an ATT iPhone 4s unlocked, he said many of his customers call from all over the world and are using unlocked ATT iPhone 4s. I asked him if he realizes what he is saying is contrary to everything everyone has ever believed in and he quite proudly stated that he just finished getting trained and that is the 'official' response.

So this is actually getting ugly! I mean if Apple is really training their employees to proudly wave in our faces that 4S is a world phone, and AT&T are the ******** of the world; I can actually agree with that. But I think apple is also acting like an ******* of the world by training their employees to tease poor iPhone customers with possibilities of things they know are not practically possible, at the expense of their now rival and new goliath AT&T, a monster they helped create a grow. Booo! I say to all sides, I am going to get TMobile and Android phone.

No. There is no point in beating out heads against a wall.

Of course... AT&T does NOT sell unlocked phones. As for telling you Apple will sell it to you for the subsidized price... AT&T employees tend to be morons.

You know what... I'm not even going to bother going on. You say you're going to go get an Android phone on T-Mobile... Have fun with that. Go troll the Android forums for a while instead of bothering us.
