iPhone won't turn off and won't sync even after I plug in my computer.

My iPhone started acting odd after my husband updated it to iOS5. It started with when I touch the apps, it responded with delay. Today, when I want to check my email. The app just simply not responding to any touch on the screen. I tried to turn off to restart, but it won't turn off. So I plug in my computer try to sync see if that can somehow makes it "budge". I successfully upload the new photos from iPhone to my MacBookPro, but after that, it won't "sync". The "sync" bottom on the itune page stay "gray". I cannot click on it. What should I do?

iPhone 4, iOS 5

the iPhone reset worked (thank goodness), although I also followed another person't advice and checked the "restrict automatic sync" under preferences, too, so not exactly sure which it was that finally did it.

I am always reluctant to upgrade software, and usually wait 2 months before doing it. Maybe now I should extend that to 4 or 5 months. This was ridiculous.

iPhone won't turn off and won't sync even after I plug in my computer.
