Yes you can. If you plan on using the wall adapter, though, the iPhone wall adapter is 5 watts while the iPad is 10 watts. Just make sure you don't charge the iPhone with the iPad's wall adapter.
The iPhone adapter will charge you iPad but at a very slow rate and your iPad must be in sleep mode. I have charged my iPhone with an iPad adapter and haven't experienced any problems.
It should be OK to charge the iPhone with the iPad adapter- I've been doing this for over a year for my iPhone 4.
I think the wattage is the maximum the PSU produces, so having plenty available doesnt harm the iPhone (but maybe someone with better electrical engineering chops can correct me on that).
Note that the iPhone adapter will be a slow way to charge the iPad, though, as there is only half the current flowing.

NO, NO, NO, ABSOLUTELY NO! Where in the world do you get your information? The 10W (2A) charger can be used to charge any IOS device. The 5W (1A) charger does not put out enough current to charge an iPad in anything resembling a reasonable amount of time. The 5W charger is intended only for iPhones and iPads.
