Are they both connected to the same Wifi network?

Sounds obvious, but I have two wifi access points here, connected to each other by cable, and AirPlay doesnt see my Apple TV if I connect my ipad though the access point the ATV is physically connected to (although it does through the other, bizarrely)

In your case, is the Pixma logged on to your wireless network correcly, or is it connected by wire?

"Printer firmware update is necessary for AirPrint function. Certain exception may apply. AirPrint functionality requires an iPad, iPhone 3GS or later, or iPod touch 3rd generation or later device running iOS 4.2 or later, and an AirPrint-enabled printer connected to the same network as your iOS device. A printer connected to the USB port of your Mac, PC, AirPort Base Station, or Time Capsule is not supported."

Laptops don't use AirPrint. AirPrint is a protocol for Apple's iOS devices only (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch). Laptops use the regular Network Printing protocol which does not require AirPrint support.

When you do follow deggie's suggestion and create your own thread, make sure you provide the make and model of the Printer you are having issues with.

That isn't exactly true apparently with El Capitan. Was setting up an all-in-one HP Laser at work last Thursday and while going through the software download and setup my computer informed me that I was currently connecting to the printer via AirPrint and did I want to switch to the HP printer driver instead. First time I have seen this.

Explained in OS X El Capitan: Add or remove a printer

I think the idea is exactly that - make everything default to AirPrint to keep setup of any Apple device simple for folks, especially with wifi and AirPrint capable printers being so common now. Plus, since all Apple devices, OS X and iOS support AirPrint, if buying a new printer all one needs to know is if it is AirPrint capable and they should be fine.

P.S. One thing I did not know is AirPrint for OS X was actually introduced with Lion!

Yeah, and thanks for the link.

Though the point still stands. The Laptop is very likely using the Printer Driver rather than AirPrint.

Still would need to know the Printer model to be sure it's AirPrint compatible.
