Can I use wireless router without computer connected?

I purchased an iPad for my mother for Christmas and want to know if it is possible to use a wireless router WITHOUT a computer. I understand that I will have to use a computer to get the iPad started and also get the router started, but then after that, do I need to keep the router connected to the computer for her to surf the Internet?

Problem is, my mother does not have a computer, I will be taking my laptop to her house to get the router and iPad started. I can't leave my laptop there indefinitely and want to know if once the iPad and router are set up and running, if the iPad will still be able to wirelessly get on the internet after I disconnect my computer.

She will need some sort of internet connection via cable/DSL modem. A wireless router is connected to the modem by Ethernet cable. The router will then generate a wireless network if so configured. You would need the computer most likely to access the router's configuration system and set up WPA2 security to prevent others from accessing the home network. Once that's done the iPad only needs to have her Apple ID and the network login information. A computer is not really needed for the iPad if it comes with iOS 5 installed.

Thank you! This is the answer I was hoping for! DSL is ordered to be installed next week and I will use my laptop when necessary to keep her router and iPad "healthy" and up to date. Just didn't want to have to leave my laptop there all the time.

Were you to get an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station, then you can install the Airport Utility app onto the iPad in order to access the AEBS settings.

It's quite possible the DSL company may install a modem/router. However, the iPad will most likely work best with an Apple router so you might ask the DSL provider to install just a plain modem. It will have an Ethernet port to which you can connect an Airport Express or an AEBS either of which can generate a local area wireless network.
