Disable iMessage without iOS5

Simple question but sometimes the answer isn't. I popped my SIM card into an iPhone that had iMessage enabled. Popped it back into my phone and anybody with iMessage hasn't been able to reach me. How do I disable this imposing feature that I have never agreed to enable in the first place?

Keep in mind, I do not have access to iOS5 for a while.

Thank you,

This I am not sure, I think it may be on the carrier's end, as for some reason your friends' messages could not be sent as SMS. Another possibility is that your friends are attempting to send to your email address rather than your phone number, so I would double check with them. Explain your situation to someone in authority and see if they will grant you permission to upgrade your phone, as this is a sure fix to the iMessage problem.

In your scenario, this only proves the point that there is no way to disable iMessage. There is no setting on your phone to change. Again, double check that these people are sending to your phone number instead of the email address, as it is either an issue with their phones or their network, but there is absolutely nothing you can do on your phone, iPhone or not.

Exactly, I totally agree with you, iMessage does not exist. So why is iOS5 on every other iPhone that has me as a contact attempts to send me an iMessage? I do not have it.

I believe this is because of the AppleID you used on the phone with iMessage. Your iMessage primary account is your AppleID and phone number. When you used the iOS 5 phone, your AppleID and phone number were registered with Apple as iMessage-enabled accounts and contact information. Now, when people send messages to you, it goes through iMessage but iMessage is unable to find an active iOS 5 device to send them to.

As mentioned, if you were able to update the current phone to iOS 5, you'd likely suddenly get a bunch of past iMessages that have been held up for all this time trying to send.

I suppose you could try contacting Apple to get your AppleID and phone number de-registered from iMessage?

Or, put it back into the iOS 5 phone, go into the settings and disable iMessage (although I am not sure that would really tell the server to stop processing your account or just disable it on the local device).
