Q: How can I prevent Aperture from playing slideshow when hitting the play button on the keyboard?

I am getting a bit frustrated by the fact that the play button on the keyboard, which I use all the time for controlling audio playback in iTunes and now Spotify, is assigned to starting the slideshow in Aperture. Playing a slideshow is something I never use, and is something that causes the beachball of death to appear every time. It does not make sense to me that the slideshow overrules the audio playback in iTunes. Help is much appreciated...

In Aperture the keyboard shortcuts are defined in the Command Editor.

To open the Command Editor,  go to the Aperture menu -> Commands -> Customize

and in the search field enter "slideshow". Remove or replace the key binding you find there, if it is the one you want to use in iTunes.

This comes up often, unfortunately there is nothing you can do about it.

The play key is not specifically reserved for iTunes. Any application that can make use of it is free to use it. The function keys are not customizable so you're stuck with this behavior.

You should send feedback to Apple concerning this Aperture->Provide Aperture Feedback

I was surprised when I read Franks answer to this a few weeks ago, it's not how I thought it would work at all, when everything else seems easily configurable. Even the Apple remote shows the same behaviour so that's no help either.

To (kind of) get round it you can click on the desktop outside of Aperture (so you have Finder selected in the menu bar), and then press the F8 button. Obviously not perfect but it may help.

Found a slight fix. 5 years later haha. Ive been having this issue ad its been driving me CRAZY! Im still on mavericks and want to show how you kinda fix the problem, so other users still on ole Mave know how.

First do what leonie said, Aperture menu -> Commands -> Customize . then search "slideshow". click the one leonie said. Now just press the delete key. The command will remain but keys will erase. Now when you hit F8 in aperture it doesn't play slide show!! It pauses music and makes the "funk" noise. you cant use the F8 key to resume music unfortunately. But it at least stops music, and doesn't slide show! hope this helps!
