split headphone jack

I wanted to watch a movie with my husband while on a plane. We had a headphone jack splitter with us. But when I wanted to use it, sound was very distorted and we couldn't hear a thing. However, the same splitter was working just fine on my iPhone. Can anyone help?

Check that the iPad headphone jack works with a single headphone without the splitter. Try both headphones. Then try the headphone with one side of the splitter, and then the other side.

If you can not use the iPad headphone jack at all, it is defective. Unless you have an "official" Apple splitter, there is no guarantee it will work. But the iPad should work by itself!

Your iPad might be defective. I could not find Apple's specifications for the iPad earphone jack, but I would not expect two earphones in parallel would cause distortion. The only way to be sure would be to try the splitter with another iPad.

You might try turning down the volume to see if distortion is reduced. If it is, there may be an optimum level with low distortion that you can still hear on both earphones.
