What am I missing? I'm new to using Apple laptops. Just out of the box, I plugged it in and when I get to the "Welcome" screen it asks what country... I select US and hit enter/return and get a tone. The arrow buttons do not allow me to do anything either.

For some reason it's the SPACE bar that selects it and not the return key. Use the tab button or the trackpad to make your selection (which will then be highlighted by the blue bar) and then hit the space bar. I felt like a total idiot calling tech support for that, but I don't get why the return key works in the first screen but not the second.

Same here... Anyone else having the same problem, use zimzo2's instructions: (use TAB key to cycle through the options then SPACE key to select and get past that screen)
The "return/enter" key and trackpad tapping didn't work for me either. Thanks for posting the solution here.
Update: Just realized that I was tapping and double tapping the MBP trackpad when you need to use the lower-corner of the pad to click. (I'm used to the separate trackpad that accepts tapping anwhere... whoops.)
I Had the same dilemma. Then I realized I wasn't actually clicked the pad. So I placed my pointer finger in the center of the pad and pressed down until I heard a click. I thought a mere tap would suffice, but no. You have to make it go "click."

You can engage tap-to-click after you finish the boot process and get logged in.
In case anyone else is reading this with the same problem, Apple Care said it sounds like a problem between the hardware and software (brilliant) and I need to take it back to the apple store I purchased it at for them to look at it. For me, that's Best Buy.
Not the best way to start off my new Apple purchase. The wait time to get help from Apple Care on the phone was excessive. Hire some more employees Apple. Plenty of people in the US need jobs.
Same thing just happened to me. With the United States highlighted in blue, just click on Continue. Apparently the blue highlight means you selected it, so just click Continue and it moves to the next screen. Or mine did. Fiddled with that for over an hour!

Press near the bottom edge and it is much more likely to click for you. The old design had a button below the bottom of the trackpad.
That whole setup assistant works better with the trackpad or mouse. I have never figured out how to use the keyboard to "make it go".

I'm sorry but there is also a Continue button on that page.
Highlight your country so it is in blue and Click Continue.
The trackpad works on all those screens.
Please don't tell me to call Apple Care. I have been on hold with them for 30 minutes now. Thought I'd try here. 😟
I have this problem too. The trackpad moves around but will not click.
Thanks. Yes, I found that in settings after I posted that... Also found the three finger drag which is an improvement on the tap-drag I used to use w/ the bluetooth trackpad on Snow Leopard.
So it was outlined in a gray box for me. Pressed the tab key to make it actually highlight in blue and then was able to click Continue
