myth of stolen iPod serial number database?

I had my 4G iPod mini stolen today and I was told that there is some Web site where you can "register" an iPod as stolen and if someone plugs in your stolen iPod, iTunes will know about it, somehow.

Is this at all true? I've been looking online and it seems that other people have had this idea, but it seems like just a myth. Is there an outside source that does this?

Thanks for the info.
Jen

Jen,
Myth, legend, hoax. Choose one. Be sure that your iPod is registered with Apple. If stolen, report it to the police, and ahve them contact Apple. If it is recovered, Apple can contact you.
