There are two very good, ripe OS:

Snow Leopard 10.6.8

and Mountain Lion 10.8.3

your MBP can handle both.

When you want SL: use the CD and install it (do not worry about the Installer number), it will be 10.6.3. After install update to 10.6.8 and the Appstore is available.

When you want to install ML: grab it from the appstore and download it, it will be in the Applications folder: before you install make a bootable copy on a USB stick (after install the "installer" has disappeared).
