my imac won"t play songs or movies from my itunes library. It won't even play songs from the iTunes store

Movies & songs are displayed, but pushing the play button yields no results. The time display will not move. U can scroll to any point in a movie and see the actual frame, so I know my media is not damaged. The iMac won't even let me preview a song from the iTunes store
have you tried to reboot your computer?
have you tried to download a file to a dir on your mac and added it to itunes and playing it?
if you're media is located on an external source not available when you try to start it from itunes what you exp is what would be expected
