Receipt confirmation option missing in Mail, also in SMS

I have asked this question a couple of times to Apple through other channels (customer surveys, e-mails, ...) ...

Why is it not possible to get a receipt confirmation for an e-mail sent through Mail ? and why is it not possible to get a "delivery report" for a text message ?

The return receipt protocol never really got accepted across the board. Some Mail clients do support RR, like Outlook, Eudora.

If you think about it... return receipt protocol confirmation, is really a waste of time. Big deal, you see when they open the email. I would just not open an email message if I saw that attached to it. And personally it is a violation of trust. Just because a person opens the mail, does not mean they read it, nor does it mean they should have to respond to you that second. I know some people use it, and their so OCD that they keep track of every opened email. (Imagine how much of the company resources you are wasting for printing out each confirmation, or saving it in a folder. For what purpose?) I use to be a realtor, and trust me, is is simple professionalism, being courteous, not to mention: good business not to send an email with a return receipt. customers, would rather do business with someone else if you sent that to them. It is as if your questioning the other persons validity. What really is the purpose? If the email is so important, follow it up with a phone call, or a snail mail, but as a professional - it is not a nice thing to use return receipt protocol confirmation. Hope this helps you.

Carlo, Linc, this would mean that you also don't accept any registered mail from your mail man then ? There are several scenario's, even in private life, where you need to have a confirmation to be able to provide evidence that certain information was provided and to defend oneself against allegations that this information was withheld ... My question is a "how-to" question, not a "why" question, so if you don't know how to do it, don't try to lecture other people on the fact that they want to learn how to ... there are enough preachers in this world as it is

Hi, leroydouglas, your response was quite helpful. I did check out the first 2 links before and found that they don't work (probably because I am using Lion and the instructions seem to be SnowLeopard or even Leopard looking at the date of the articles).

However, the third actually sent me to a service available on the internet, and I have signed up for the service in trial mode, and sent a test e-mail to my girlfriend. The read confirmation came in a couple of seconds after she opened the mail ... this is exactly what I was hoping to achieve. I will check out further what the conditions are (fees etc.) to have this service available on a prolonged basis ... in any case, thanks alot.

Do you know if SMS delivery reports are possible in iPhone ? I found some tips on certain providers to add certain code to an SMS to trigger delivery reports, but my provider (Mobistar in Belgium) is not in that list. Strange, since from a simple Nokia (old model, not smartphone), delivery receipts on the same provider work fine ...

Well I was just trying to be helpful. But to clarify, registered mail is not the same as return receipt with email. Registered mail, your getting a specific person to sign for a package, return receipt just lets you know when it was opened; it does not necessarily mean that a person got the email. If you need... "to have a confirmation to be able to provide evidence that certain information was provided and to defend oneself against allegations that this information was withheld" you could go to your sent mail folder; then go to view tab; then go to "message" and select "all headers." and print out what you need with the email showing all headers. That will hold up in court; not the return reciept email.

I would try talking to your provider for inhouse SMS support.
